In a stunning series of public statements, FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary has directly accused the U.S. government of creating Lyme disease as a biological weapon, lending explosive new support to a Congressional investigation into the matter. His claims come as the FY26 National Defense Authorization Act, carrying an amendment mandating a formal probe into the weaponization of ticks, heads to President Trump’s desk.

The amendment, authored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), compels the Government Accountability Office to investigate whether the Pentagon’s Cold War-era bioweapons program intentionally used ticks to spread pathogens. Dr. Makary’s declarations now provide the highest-level official acknowledgment to date supporting these long-held suspicions.

“I can tell you with a high degree of probability, It came from Lab 257 on Plum Island, just outside of Connecticut, 25 miles from Lyme, Connecticut.”

Makary stated in late 2025 interviews

His assertions grew even more pointed. In widely circulated social media posts from his official account, Makary declared, “The US Government Turned Ticks into BIOLOGICAL BOMBS – Lyme Disease Was Created In Lab 257 On Plum Island.”

Dr. Makary’s comments delve into the controversial history of the Plum Island Animal Disease Center, linking its research to former Nazi scientists brought to the U.S. after World War II under programs like Operation Paperclip. He specifically referenced virologist Erich Traub, who worked on animal-borne biological weapons for the Third Reich and later contributed to research on Plum Island.

These revelations align with the research in Kris Newby’s book,

Bitten: The Secret History of Lyme Disease and Biological Weapons, which details how U.S. bioweapons specialist Dr. Willy Burgdorfer and others experimented with tick-borne pathogens. Rep. Smith’s amendment was explicitly inspired by these findings.

With a sitting FDA Commissioner now echoing these claims, the upcoming GAO investigation is poised to be one of the most consequential inquiries into government transparency in decades. For millions of Americans suffering from Lyme disease, the pursuit of a cure may now be inextricably linked to uncovering a dark chapter of Cold War history.
